The Gathering of the Juggalos, Day 2

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Remarkably, I slept very well. Despite rolling slightly downhill all night, I'd managed to get a solid 8 hours of reasonably sound sleep. It was a little stuffy, and there was some dew accumulating on the inside of the tent, but overall it was pretty comfortable. Before I was actually out of bed, it started to rain slightly, but luckily the tent held solid and the rain passed after just a few minutes. By the time I was up, Pamela and Nick were already up and around, having had a good night of sleep as well. Pamela had just arrived back from a shower, and despite having been warned extensively beforehand about how gross the showers were, she said she was pleasantly surprised. I figured that I might as well get a move on and get my shower, despite it not even being 8:00am yet! Oy!

Just like Pamela, I found the showers to be quite a bit nicer than I'd imagined. You could tell that they had been well used by many years of festivals, but it wasn't dirty. There were maybe 6 or 8 shower stalls along the back wall, with benches along the front wall to use as a changing area. Quite functional, all told. Once I was done with my shower, me and my wet hair made my way back to the campsite, which immediately resulted in my legs and feet being coated with dust and grime. Yuck! But what could I do? haha

DSCF9389

Back at camp, I got changed into my Violent J shirt and shorts, pulled my hair into a pony tail, and donned what would be the first of many bandanas. I was a little wary of the bandanas when I was planning the trip, but ultimately I was so glad that I'd brought them because I NEVER worried about how my hair looked even a single time. It was liberating to completely remove that worry from the trip, and I definitely plan on wearing them on any future summer trips I take.

At a little after 8:00am, Pamela, Nick and I decided to walk around again and see what was going on. The Bomb House and wrestling stage were quiet for now, and even Lake Hepatitis only had a few people swimming in it (in fact, I never saw the lake full of people).

DSCF9392

We made it as far as the Spazmatic Hangout before stopping, at which time, I bought a Moon Mist in a bottle. For $2, I guess it was an ok deal, considering that we were at a music festival. While we hung out, we did a fair deal of people watching...Juggalos are so interesting to watch :-) We're all completely different, and all interesting in our own ways.

DSCF9393

At one point, Nick got out his camcorder and got everyone in the area to "show some love to the camera" and ended up with an awesome video of everyone yelling "Fam-uh-ly."

DSCF9394

DSCF9397

After quite a while of just chilling and soaking it all in, Nick grabbed a huge $7 bag of ice and we headed back to our campsite for a while. Along the way, someone joked that we were giving Nick the cold shoulder since we were making him carry the ice (and since he had the ice flung over one shoulder) haha.

DSCF9402
Car dust drawings were plentiful everywhere you looked

Back at camp, we filled up the coolers with the ice, and took a minute to chill over some snacks, and lament the fact that it wasn't even 11:00am yet. Second stage music started at 2:00pm, so we still had a LONG time to kill. But we just hung out, relaxed, and planned out what we were gonna see each of the other days.

At 11:00am, we decided to catch the first thing on the schedule, which was a wet t-shirt contest at the Bomb House. I really, truly don't care about a contest like that, and neither did Pamela and Nick, but since it was the only thing going on, we took a peek.

DSCF9407

When we arrived, people were just standing around throwing things at each other, including two very large plastic trash cans! This was my first (but definitely not my last!!) encounter with the whole "Juggalos throw things when they're bored" phenomenon. I knew they threw stuff at performers they didn't like, but I really didn't realize to what extent they take the throwing. Since there wasn't anything going on just yet, we decided to forget about it, and walked back up to Spazmatic.

Once at Spazmatic, there still wasn't much going on, so we just sat down and people watched a little more. After a few minutes, I decided to wander around and see what there was to see. I headed off by myself, and just wandered anywhere that I felt like going. I ended up walking all over the Lost Ninja Clan, Looney Boonies and Chaos Districts of the campground...

DSCF9410

DSCF9411

...and watched the helicopter go on multiple trips.

The rides weren't open yet, and for the moment, the area in front of Main Stage was still a relatively grassy field...oh how that would change by Sunday night haha. I knew that Pamela and Nick were going to be at Second Stage by the time the performances started there, so when I was done wandering, I headed over that way, and found them both chilling out in some shade near the stage.

I sat down next to them, and the first act we watched was a girl named Yoshi I think.

DSCF9416

She was really entertaining and the crowd was really getting into it, but then her microphone started cutting in and out. They tried to get it fixed for a few minutes, but ultimately her set got cut short because they had so many people on the bill and they had to keep it moving. By this time, Pamela and Nick were ready for a break, so we all went back to the camp and relaxed for a while.

DSCF9417
Everyone's favorite site...the sani-truck coming to clean out the port-a-potties

DSCF9418

While we were there, Moonshine stopped by for a visit, but quickly moved along after a few minutes. I swear Moonshine was the most popular guy at the Gathering. Any time we saw him, everyone around him knew who he was, and he was always so easy to distinguish because of his straw hat and cooler.

DSCF9422

Soon boredom set in, so we went back to second Stage just in time to catch the last two acts that played. Overall it was a good time, and of course the people watching was superb! haha Once the Second stage stuff was over for the day, it was time for the Main stage events to start. The first person on the bill was Mastamind, who honestly I'd never even heard of before he was announced as a performer. I was never a big fan of mainstream rap music, so quite a few of the people were new to me.

DSCF9434
Look at me! I'm at the Gathering!

We stayed a little way back from the stage for the time being, and when Mastamind's set was over, Pamela suggested riding a couple of the carnival rides.

DSCF9438

We started with the Scrambler, which she said was her favorite of the carnival rides.

DSCF9446

Once we were done, we went over to the Tornado, which she said she'd never ridden. It was funny to watch her stress out about not being able to take her beer on the ride, and hoping that no one would take it while she was riding. Of course I had to poke fun at her, saying that all the people getting off the ride were eyeballing her beer like they were gonna walk off with it haha But ultimately, she got the beer back just fine!

DSCF9450

The next performer was DJ Quik, who was another new-to-me performer. We'd worked our way forward on the right side of the stage, and had somehow ended up just one person away from the barricade, just under the large Gathering banner hanging there. He was entertaining enough, I guess. Part of the way through DJ Quik's set, I said that I was hungry, so I decided to go back to the campsite for a minute and grab a bite to eat. So I left Pamela and Nick in our spot, and walked back to the site.

Once I arrived, I grabbed a honey bun and some water, and sat down to relax for a while. With the length of time that I stayed at the camp, I was pretty sure that I'd have missed all of Paul Wall's set, which was no big deal since I've never listened to him either. Once I was rested and ready to head back to the Main Stage for the evening, I miraculously was able to make my way back up to the exact spot I'd had earlier. I somehow ended up getting shuffled a little closer to the center of the stage than Pamela and Nick did, so I ended up surrounded by people I didn't know. At this point, we ended up waiting a LONG time for something to happen. People around me were saying that Paul wall hadn't even gone on yet!

DSCF9455

To pass the time, people were bopping some big balloons around, the catching them, signing them, and sending them back into the air.

DSCF9460

Once Dustin Diamond made his way out on stage to announce the next act, it was only then that he announced that Paul Wall had no-showed, and that the next act was going to be E-40.

DSCF9468

E-40, yet again, was another rapper that I wasn't familiar with. Luckily, once he was done, there was only a minimal delay before MC Hammer took the stage.

DSCF9484
STOP! Hammertime!

It was kind of surreal to be in such a huge group of Juggalos watching someone who I was a fan of when I was 9 years old!! All told, Hammer put on a fantastic set. His backup dancers were a little cheesy, but it's FREAKING MC HAMMER, and he's allowed to have cheesy backup dancers. At one point, he came out into the crowd and walked around while singing, and came within about 7 or 8 feet of me!

DSCF9491

I got an awesome picture of him surrounded by Juggalos on all sides, with balloons overhead and carnival rides in the background. It just really summed up the moment perfectly.

Once Hammer was back on stage, he played a few more songs, then we saw every security guard in the area rush backstage. We had no idea what was going on, but it turned out that they were just allowing a bunch of people to go up on the stage with Hammer for his finale.

DSCF9510

Of course, the finale was Can't Touch This, and he probably had 200 happy, dancing Juggalos up on stage with him (including Moonshine and the guy who walked around with the lamp every night). It was really fun, and of course the 9 year old MC Hammer fan in me thought it was awesome to see him perform it live.

After Hammer was done, we had the most grueling wait of the Gathering. We all stood for TWO AND A HALF HOURS waiting for Busta Rhymes. No one came out to apologize for the delay, or give any kind of update or ANYTHING. We just stood, packed like sardines for a solid two and a half hours. Once Dustin Diamond finally came back out, he just did a very brief "Ok, our next performer is Busta Rhymes!" as though there had been no wait at all! WTF?? My back was killing me by this point, and both of the girls in front of me had taken the liberty of squatting down and peeing right where they stood since everything was taking so long!! I was kinda pissed when Busta Rhymes actually came out since I was hoping that they would just skip him and go directly to Dark Lotus so I'd be that much closer to being able to sit down! But no. Ain't that the luck of the Juggalo.

DSCF9513

So Busta Rhymes performed, and honestly he was quite good. He started out trying to be all hard, and was grabbing himself and whatnot, but by the end of the set, you could really tell that he'd caught the vibe of the crowd.

DSCF9522

DSCF9526

To end his set, he said a bunch of nice stuff about how much he'd enjoyed the opportunity to perform, and how he'd love to come back in future years. It was really cool to see someone who really seemed like he wasn't into it suddenly morph into someone who "got it" and wanted to come back. I just hope all of what he said was genuine.

Once Busta was done, it was time for the main event...what would end up being far and away my favorite performance of the Gathering, and my overall highlight as well...Dark Lotus! It was 1:30am by the time they took the stage. It was tired, and by this point I'd been standing at the Main Stage for about seven total hours that night. Needless to say, I was ready to sit down! But the second that I saw the guys come out on stage in their Black Rain outfits and paint, every single bit of that discomfort was pushed to the back of my mind. I was getting to watch Dark Lotus! They usually only do one performance a year, and I was there, only one person away from the barricade! Luckily, where I was standing was a prime spot since people were always moving around, and someone was always stopping there. I snapped pictures as furiously as I could, and I ended up with some amazing ones! They sang an awesome lineup of their songs, including Heinous and Juggalo Family, which are two of my very favorites. Dennis had made a big deal about wanting to see Dark Lotus perform, but some delays at home had prevented him from getting there on time. Of course I thought of him when the sang Juggalo Family!

After the amazing, amazing, amazing Dark Lotus performance, it felt so good to be walking instead of just standing still in one place! haha I briefly went back to the camp to sit down and get a bottle of water, then I was immediately off to the Bomb House to check out whatever "Murder of Crows with Boondox" was gonna be. It struck me as odd in advance when I noticed that Boondox was double booked that evening, with Murder of Crows with Boondox and Psychopathic Rydas both falling in the same time slot. I just sort of assumed that he wasn't performing in Rydas that night. But given how much I absolutely love Boondox, I'd decided to forgo seeing the Rydas in favor of whatever his Murder of Crows thing was gonna be. When I arrived, there were only about a dozen people there, all of whom looked like they'd rather be in bed right then! They were playing South of Hell over the speakers, and I ended up waiting from We All Fall through the end of the album. When the music finally turned off, someone came out and said that we all needed to leave and go watch the Rydas! What?? Confused, we all got up and left. I just wished they'd told us sooner.

Arriving at Second Stage, I was just in time to see the last couple of songs of Hopsin's set. Hopsin is a crazy talented dude, and I can't wait to see where his career takes him. At the end of his set, he came out and said that they were cutting his set short by two songs, which made everyone boo. But there wasn't much he could do about it.

DSCF9610

After just a few minutes, Psychopathic Rydas took the stage. It was so funny to watch them move around the stage, and you could pinpoint who each Ryda was just based on their mannerisms. I particularly thought it was cool that ABK is back in Rydas, and that he performs with one arm tucked inside his shirt, and the shirt sleeve rolled up. I thought "Sawed off" was a play on the fact that he's missing part of one of his fingers...I didn't realize that Sawed Off was actually missing an entire arm haha

DSCF9614

By the time the Rydas were done, I was beyond exhausted and just needed to collapse into bed ASAP. I briefly thought about going back by the Bomb House to see if the Murder of Crows party was going on, but quickly decided against it since I was just too tired. When I made it back to my tent, I got changed and crawled into my bed, only to realize that the sun was starting to rise outside. Luckily though, I fell asleep quite easily.

The Gathering of the Juggalos, Day 3

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Despite the very, very late night the night before, I still managed to be awake at 8:00am (after only about 2 1/2 hours of sleep!) so I'd have enough time to get showered and ready for the ICP seminar. Once I was up, I made my way over to the showers, and waited in about a half hour line before it was my turn. If I didn't need the shower beforehand, waiting in the sun for half an hour certainly made me need one! I also saw this girl get pulled out of the shower line for something suspicious by some people on a golf cart. All she had on was a towel, and when they came up, they asked if she wanted to go with them and take a shower backstage, and they weren't gonna ask her to do much in exchange. Surprisingly, the girl got on the golf cart and left, and the rest of us just stood there looking at each other, shocked.

Once it was my turn, I showered quickly, then made my way back to the camp. After a honey bun and some other various snacks for breakfast, I packed up some water, some snacks and my ICP photo prints that I wanted signed, and headed off for the seminar tent. I'd heard in advance that you needed to arrive at least two hours early for the ICP seminar, and that was spot on. The tent was already full when I arrived, but since I was by myself, I was lucky enough to find a single seat on a hay bale, a little to left of the stage and about halfway back. While everyone was waiting, people were throwing stuff around...full bottles, beer cans, bags of potato chips, even full garbage bags! Why why why is this fun to people?? The people sitting directly to my right took their cooler and filled it up with water, then refilled all the bottles that landed in their area so they would be throwing full bottles instead of empty ones.

DSCF9635

And there was one guy up by the front holding a big sign that said "We need an island!" who ended up being the target of most of the flying objects. Luckily I managed to escape getting hit, though I did end up with a few wet spots on me.

2:00pm came and went, and by 2:45pm, ICP had made their grand arrival at the Seminar Tent. I'd been waiting for two hours and 45 minutes by that point, so I was very ready for them to get the show on the road!

DSCF9638

The first thing they brought up was the news that they thought was the biggest and most important, which was that Vanilla Ice had been signed to Psychopathic. Everyone was excited, but later, when Violent J announced that there would be a new Dark Lotus album released before next year's Gathering, the whole tent erupted in cheers! That was definitely bigger, more exciting news than Vanilla Ice! They also announced a new autobiography that they were working on, as well as improvements to the radio station website and info about the extra discs that would be sold with the Mighty Death Pop. Everything sounded great all around, and it was cool to be there, in the "nucleus of the Juggalo universe" as Violent J put it, when everything was announced.

DSCF9639

DSCF9642

By the end of the seminar, it almost hurt to stand up hahaha But I made it :-) Knowing that the seminar had run late by about an hour, I knew that the ICP autograph signing was also going to be running at least an hour late.

DSCF9649

So I made my way over to the autograph tent, and got at the end of a very, very long line at about 4:00pm. The people in front of me ended up being really cool...one was a very young couple from Chicago who had hitch hiked to the Gathering and had no ride home, and the other was a slightly older (but still considerably younger than me) couple from somewhere in Indiana. We all had a good time chatting, and tried to find amusing ways to pass the time. At one point a guy came by selling freeze pops for $.25, so of course everyone in the area bought them up, and he sold out in no time.

DSCF9654

At one point, the line was moving so slowly that the two couples joined forces and made a small bonfire in the line haha Too funny.

DSCF9657
Success!

At 6:00pm, Corporal Robinson popped out of the tent and said that ICP really wasn't supposed to be signing anything after 6:00 since Main Stage acts were starting, but that they didn't want to strand the people in line. So he instructed everyone to get out whatever they wanted to be signed, and Violent J and Shaggy would go down the line and quickly sign everyone's stuff. Luckily, people followed orders and everyone got to get their stuff signed quickly, then moved out of the way.

DSCF9661

DSCF9662

DSCF9664 crop

When it was my turn, I handed over my photo of Shaggy from the January show, which he signed with my silver pen. I also managed to sneak a quick self portrait with him.

DSCF9665

When it was Violent J's turn, again I handed over the photo I had of him, and snapped a self portrait. I'd wanted to really give him a heartfelt "thank you" for creating the whole Juggalo phenomenon, but since he was having to move by so fast, all I got to say was "Thank you for everything." But he locked eyes with me briefly and gave me a very sincere "Thank YOU" back, so I know that he knew what I meant.

By the time I had my autographs, I was exhausted and just wanted to chill out for a while. It was about 6:30pm by the time I got back to the camp site...a full six hours after I left! And I'd only done one seminar and one signing. Ugh.

DSCF9666
Meanwhile, back at the camp...

Pamela and Nick were there when I arrived, which was cool since I barely saw them once the Gathering was underway. They did a lot of Second Stage acts, wrestling shows and other randomness like that, where I did all the stuff that required waiting in lines. Smart move on their part! Since we were all there, we decided to throw our hotdogs on the grill and have some dinner. Good thing that I like my hot dogs burned because we managed to burn the crap out of all the dogs we put on the grill haha. But they were a nice change from snack food. A little before 8:00pm, I got a text from Dennis saying that he'd finally arrived, and for me to come meet him at the gate. At that point, I headed out of camp, and grabbed my campground map so I could hopefully make my way out to him easily.

Well I walked toward the spot marked "ticket booth" on the map, since that was apparently the only entrance to the grounds once the festival started. I made my way to that general area, but had to stop to ask a security guard for exact directions. Well, the directions he gave me stank, and led me directly back to the path where my camp was, which I knew was the complete opposite way. By the time I made it back to the area where I thought I was supposed to be, I got a call from Dennis saying that he was back by Main Stage at an entrance there, where the artists come in. Now I truly had no idea where he was, but I started to walk off in the general direction of Main stage, hoping to see an entrance there once I got there. Well, maybe five minutes later, he calls back, only to tell me that he was actually at the spot marked "ticket booth." Grrr!!! So I'd walked almost all the way out to the ticket booth, then back as far as the carnival rides, then had to walk all the way out to the ticket booth again. And did I mention that I was carrying my folding chair? And did I also mention that I could hear Kottonmouth Kings playing in the background he entire time? Finally, someone that Dennis knew who happened to be outside said that he'd come in and find me, and take me out to the gate so I could get Dennis in.

Finally I got to the gate, and managed to get him his wristband and charm, and we were on our way in. I was annoyed at him for giving me such bad directions, but what made me extra annoyed was that I had missed almost every second of KMK's set. I'm a brand new KMK fan, and was SO looking forward to seeing them perform, but I only got to see about ten minutes of their set because I was walking all over creation trying to find Dennis. Once we finally got to the Main Stage area, he still had everything he'd brought with him, including his pillow and a couple of blankets, all laying in a heap next to him. Turned out that he'd enlisted some guy to follow us in and carry some of his stuff since a bag of his had broken on the way in. I hadn't even noticed a guy following us all that way! haha

Once we enjoyed the final ten minutes of KMK's set, Dennis said that he wanted to drop his stuff off at the camp. That was fine with me, so I packed up my chair...

DSCF9672

...and he grabbed everything of his, which was now draped all over him since he refused to let me carry anything but a single pair of shoes! We got as far as the lawn in front of Spazmatic before he said he needed a break, and collapsed into what looked like a heap of laundry. I sat with him for a minute, then said that I'd like to grab a bite to eat since I hadn't had much real food since I arrived. He said he'd wait for me, so I ran over and got in line at the gyro place. Once I had my chicken gyro, I went back over to Dennis and chilled for a minute while I ate my dinner. It was really good, but it was very messy, which of course proved to be an awkward conundrum. My hands always stayed filthy through the Gathering because there were NO sinks anywhere where you could wash your hands. I'd used Purell before I ate, but I still didn't feel clean at all. So I had all this yummy juice and sauce running all over my hands, but I didn't want to lick it off haha Napkins to the rescue.

When I was done with my gyro, I said that I wanted to go get a Faygo, so Dennis again offered to wait for me. I went up to Spazmatic and bought a Moon Mist, and made my way back over to Dennis. Once he was well rested, he hoisted all of his stuff up onto his shoulders and we made our way across the Drug Bridge and up to the camp. Dennis took a few minutes to arrange some of his stuff in the living room area of the tent (since my room was way too small to share...it barely fit my mattress and duffel bag sitting next to each other!). Since Dennis had just arrived, he was itching to get back to Main Stage, so once his stuff was dropped off, we quickly made our way back to the action.

DSCF9681 crop

When we arrived, we were just in time to see Ice Cube be announced. We stayed a fair distance back since neither of us felt the need to really be close for his performance. The only Ice Cube song I ever enjoyed was It Was a Good Day, which was of course his last and most impressive song. Dennis was so into it...it was so fun! The whole crowd was into it actually, and he got tons of Whoop Whoops when he was done. After his set, it was amazing to see all the people flood away from the Main Stage, completely not caring that ABK was about to perform. Just as well, since Dennis and I were both quite excited to see ABK again.

With the majority of the crowd gone, we were able to get fairly close to the front for ABK's performance. I didn't feel the need to fight to get to the front since I've already been up front at two of his shows, and I know that there will be more shows at the Muse in the future. So I was content to hang back and let others have the closer spots. During one particularly violent moment of moshing, someone rammed their foot into Dennis' shin, when resulted in a big gash, and a quick trip to the medic tent for him. The rest of the set was great, though I really prefer to see people in smaller venues.

DSCF9686

DSCF9691

Once he was done, I wandered out of the area, keeping a lookout for Dennis. Eventually I found him sitting down near the carnival rides...exactly where the text that he sent me (that I didn't see until afterward) told me he would be haha. I sat down next to him, and we ended up just sitting there enjoying the moment for the better part of an hour. We watched the rides, and enjoyed the absolutely gorgeous night air, knowing that we still had a couple of hours before anything else interesting was going to start.

At about 2:00am, we got up and meandered over to the Freakshow tent so we could catch the Kung Fu Vampire and Critical Bill shows. Quite possibly the only act that performed exactly on schedule for the entire Gathering was Kung Fu Vampire, who started at the very stroke of 2:15am.

DSCF9710

This was the first time I'd seen them, and I loved their performance! I really, really hope I can see them at the Muse some day! I did find it odd though that the lead singer wasn't wearing his face paint, and was in some normal looking plaid shirt. It's got to be one of the bigger shows they do all year...you'd think they'd make sure to be in full paint and costumes. Oh well. Irregardless, I enjoyed the set much more than I thought I would. As the crowd subsided for a minute, I made my way up to the barricade.

DSCF9711

Next up was Critical Bill, who I have grown to love since I saw them open for ABK last year. Their music is perfectly what I love, and rides that line between hard rock and hip hop. And their lead singer is smoking hot too...that never hurts haha. They actually came out on time as well, and did an awesome job at getting the crowd riled up.

DSCF9715

Powerdise (the hot lead singer) came out into the audience to stir up a mosh pit, which actually ended up being quite a bit rougher than I anticipated. There was one dude who was maybe 13 or 14 years old just to my right who obviously didn't know how to mosh since THREE TIMES he rammed into me with his elbow sticking straight into my back. The first time, I figured he was just off balance. The second time, I gave him a dirty "Oww that really hurt" look, but the third time, I turned around and was like "Dude! Quit ramming your elbows into me! That HURTS!" The lady next to him, who looked like the parental chaperone of a school group, was like "It was an accident!" Yeah, tell that to the bruises on my back!

Once Critical Bill's set was over, the only thing still going on was the JCW Legends and Icons wrestling match. I'm NOT a wrestling fan, but I know how much love Psychopathic pours into their JCW efforts, so I figured that I owed it to them to at least peep it for a few minutes. I was really, really tired by the time we sat down, and I felt like just leaning over and falling asleep on Dennis' shoulder.

DSCF9738

Once the first round started, I could tell that it was just not gonna be my thing at all. Wrestling is just too fake to me...even knowing that it's fake, it still seems too fake to me. I just can't get into it. We only lasted through one round before we decided to head back to camp and call it a night.

When we went back to camp, we took the shortcut through the middle of the woods so we could simultaneously avoid the huge hill in one direction and the far walk to the Drug Bridge in the other. It was pitch black, with the only light coming from the moon and the occasional passerby who had a flashlight. By the time we got back to Second Stage, it was light enough to make the rest of the trip without worry. Back at the camp, Dennis took it upon himself to give me a foot rub while I relaxed on my mattress, which made me quickly drift off to sleep.
